Laser refractive surgery

Presbyopia surgery

Presbyopia develops with age and makes near vision increasingly difficult. Several solutions, in particular the laser, can reduce dependence on reading glasses. The choice is made after a complete assessment.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the natural, age-related change in vision. Over time, the crystalline lens inside the eye gradually loses its flexibility: it can no longer bulge sufficiently to focus at close range. Reading and near tasks then become blurred and tiring.

It generally begins around the age of forty and progresses for several years before stabilising. Presbyopia affects everyone, including people who have never previously needed a visual correction.

Presbyopia is not a disease: it is a natural and universal phenomenon. It may be superimposed on pre-existing myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

Which signs should prompt attention?

The first signs appear in near vision:

  • need to hold text or a phone at arm's length to read it clearly;
  • difficulty reading small print, especially in low light;
  • need for more light to read;
  • visual fatigue, headaches after prolonged near work.

In the presence of these signs, an ophthalmological assessment clarifies the degree of presbyopia and checks overall vision.

Why does it occur?

Presbyopia is caused by the natural ageing of the crystalline lens and the muscle that controls its focusing. The lens becomes less flexible and accommodation, the reflex that allows the switch from distance to near vision, loses its effectiveness. This process is gradual and inevitable.

What solutions are available to correct presbyopia?

Several approaches exist; the choice depends on your age, your distance vision, the condition of the lens and your lifestyle. It is decided after the assessment.

Laser (PresbyLasik)

The laser reshapes the cornea to distribute vision across several distances and facilitate near vision. This option is suited to selected profiles, determined by the assessment.

Monovision

One eye is corrected preferentially for distance vision and the other for near vision. An adaptation period is required; a preliminary simulation often allows tolerance to be tested.

No solution is "the best" in absolute terms: the right option is the one that suits your eyes and your needs, defined with you at the assessment.

Am I eligible for correction?

The indication can only be established after a complete assessment. Several factors are taken into account:

  • the degree of presbyopia and any associated visual defect;
  • the condition of the cornea and crystalline lens;
  • your visual habits (screen work, reading, night driving);
  • your expectations, discussed together without any promise of outcome.

How is care managed with Dr Gattoussi?

The approach is gradual and without commitment: the first consultation serves to assess your vision and inform you.

  1. 1

    Complete visual assessment

    Measurement of near and distance vision, examination of the cornea and lens, ocular imaging.

  2. 2

    Information and shared decision

    Presentation of the options suited to your situation, their benefits and their limitations.

  3. 3

    Procedure, if indicated

    Depending on the chosen option, laser treatment or monovision.

  4. 4

    Post-operative follow-up

    Check-ups to support adaptation and recovery.

What is the recovery like?

Recovery depends on the solution chosen. Transient discomfort and fluctuating vision in the initial period are normal, as is a period of adaptation during which the brain adjusts to the new visual conditions.

  • prescribed eye drops according to the procedure;
  • visual rest for the first few days;
  • return to activities in accordance with the advice given;
  • scheduled follow-up appointments.

Where does the procedure take place?

The consultation and assessment take place at Dr Gattoussi's practice, at the Med-Ophta centre, 95 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, 75011 Paris. The procedure takes place at a dedicated surgical centre.

Frequently asked questions about presbyopia

From what age does presbyopia develop?

Presbyopia most often begins around the age of forty and progresses for several years.

Can presbyopia and myopia be corrected at the same time?

Depending on the case, a single strategy can address several visual defects. This point is evaluated at the assessment.

Is the correction permanent?

This depends on the solution chosen and the natural evolution of the eye. The limitations are explained at the consultation.

Is presbyopia correction covered by insurance?

Refractive surgery is generally not covered by the French national health insurance; some supplementary health plans offer a fixed contribution. Details are clarified at the consultation.
