Retina & medical conditions

Medical retina & AMD

Medical retina manages, without major surgery, diseases of the back of the eye, including AMD, the leading cause of visual impairment from the age of 55.

Retinal and macular examination

What medical retina involves

It covers the diagnosis and treatment of macular and retinal vascular disease: AMD, macular oedema, retinal vein occlusions. State-of-the-art imaging (OCT, angiography) guides every clinical decision.

AMD and its symptoms

Age-related macular degeneration affects central vision.

  • Distortion of straight lines.
  • A dark patch in the centre of vision.
  • Increased need for light when reading.

Management and treatment

The wet form is treated with intravitreal injections, which stabilise and sometimes improve vision. The dry form is managed with monitoring and preventive advice.

Follow-up

  1. Initial assessment with OCT.
  2. Personalised treatment plan and injection schedule if required.
  3. Regular macular monitoring.
